If you are the kind of parent who has a younger student who you want to encourage to develop good reading habits, then you are going to love this article. It is chock full of suggestions to getting your youngster hooked on books.
My first suggestion is one that many already know, but often don't take the time to implement. Read to your children. Start with easy books while they are very young. Even though they don't seem to understand what you are doing, their young brains are already starting to learn the fundamental skills of reading. When you little ones go to bed, make it a daily ritual where you read a book to them before they go to sleep. How many of you remember your moms and dads sharing this very special time with you?
A second suggestion is to link reading with an exciting trip. A trip to the zoo is often appreciated by younger children, or even a trip to a museum. Get a book about animals, or one that has information related to the museum trip they are going to take. For example, a book about Dinosaurs could be linked to a trip to a science museum. Having children relate what they are reading to real life experiences anchors the importance of reading in their minds at a very young age.
My final suggestion works even with children that hate to read. Find a subject that your child is passionate about learning, and then subscribe to a magazine devoted to that subject. Let me tell you a story about a youngster named Alex.
Alex hated reading, but loved to play video games. Every waking hour was spent trying to get the highest score possible. Alex's parents purchased a subscription to a gaming magazine. Can you picture what happened next? Every month, Alex would wait at the mailbox for his gaming magazine. He devoured every word of the magazine. He became the best gamer in his school. More importantly, when Alex grew older, his reading tastes evolved. Today he is an outstanding reader.
Do you have a child like Alex? If so you will love using this easy strategy. Does your child love sports? Get them a sports magazine. Does your daughter love fashion? Get her a fashion magazine. By the way, this strategy works just as well with children who love to read. It just gets them to read even more.
We need more children in this country who can read so they can acquire the skills needed for tomorrow's jobs. Following the suggestions found in this article is a great place to start getting your child interested in reading.
