Take a break from every few hours to catch your breath. A five or ten minute break can help you to get relaxed and will help you to regain control of your anxieties. Take a couple of deep breaths, take a quick walk to help unwind, or read a book. Taking a small break will help you to refocus on what still needs to be done later in the day.

Learn to plan your family tasks ahead of time. It is easier to follow a structured plan then it is to just do whatever comes to mind. Developing some kind of plan for the next day will help you to stay focus on what needs to be done. Once you accomplish your daily goals, you will feel better about yourself.

It takes even more gumption, and creativity, to juggle five projects, and those same two kids and that same friend.

Sometimes the creativity is required to figure out how you can manage one thing later. "Jack, I know you want to show your new game to me right now, but actually, I've been asleep for about an hour. Could we do it in the morning?"

Sometimes the creativity is figuring out how to handle two projects at once. "Hmmm. If I write an article on creativity AND writing, I could use it in my writing ezine AND my creativity ezine.

Sometimes the creativity is in finding a sensitive way to say, "I can't right now." "Samantha, I know you want to play badminton. I have an abscessed tooth and can't move my head. How about Old Maid on the bed instead?"

And sometimes the creativity is just in remembering that these are people, things and situations you love and want to enjoy, and then going and enjoying them.

Even though meditation is an exercise of the mind and not that of speech or the body, our bodies and our minds are closely interconnected. Since our bodies and minds are so closely interconnected it is very important that when we meditate that we maintain proper posture. Maintaining proper posture is important because it facilitates the mind in being concentrated and clear.

If you are going to meditate sitting on a cushion or on a folded up blanket or towel, you should sit cross-legged, or ideally in the lotus position with each foot laying on top of the opposite thigh. If sitting in the lotus position is too hard we should attempt to sit as close as possible as long as you are comfortable.If you are going to sit in a chair to meditate you should let your feet rest on the floor.

Now that you are sitting, your back should be straight and erect. Your right hand should be placed and resting on the left hand with your palms facing upwards and with the tips of your thumbs raised a little and touching each other resting around the navel.

Your mouth should be closed ever so slightly, with the tip of your tongue gently touching the back of your teeth. Your head should be tilted a little forward with your eyes almost closed with your shoulders remaining level. This is the posture that you should assume during all of your meditation sessions.

Once you have settled yourself in the correct meditation posture, it is time to posture your mind. You should try to calm your mind because if you have monkey mind, a busy and distracted mind, your meditation will be fruitless and unsuccessful.

The breathing meditation will start now. This meditation is designed to dispel distracting thoughts in order to obtain a clear, calm mind. Now as you exhale you will imagine the you are breathing out all your distracting thoughts in the form of smoke, which will disappear in to space. As you inhale you will imagine that you are breathing in goodness, peace, and serenity which will enter in your body as a clear light and dissolving into your heart. You will repeat this inhalation/exhalation, breathing out your distractions and inhaling the good things. You should do this for about 15 minutes or until you feel calm and serene.

One of the habits that has served me well throughout my life is keeping the mind-set of a student. I've always had an insatiable curiosity about a wide variety of topics, and I'm usually reading several books during the same time period. 1) Develop Awareness. - Most of us spend our days rushing blindly from one activity to another without ever noticing our surroundings. Step outside during the day and feel the sunshine on your face, and indulge in some deep, cleansing breaths. Become aware of your own spiritual self, and your connection to all living things. 2) Keep an Open Mind. - Rather than assuming you know all about something already, approach each situation with an attitude of curiosity. Question everything. Don't assume you know what they're all about based on their appearance or some preconceived notion. Ask questions, get to know them better. Be willing to release any judgments you may have, and instead seek truth.

3) Keep an Open Heart. - Express deep gratitude for your life, and all of the experiences you have - even the not so pleasant ones. Be willing to be vulnerable in your connections with others, and allow yourself to feel. Too often we are afraid of our emotions and try to numb them or run away from them. Instead, let your emotions be your teachers. Listen to them, and honor them. They will teach you a lot about yourself.

4) Look for the Lesson. - In every experience, ask yourself, "What can I learn from this?" Sometimes the lesson is obvious, and sometimes you'll have to search for it. With every lesson, allow it to become a part of you and make you a better, stronger, happier person. Though we all make mistakes and stumble, the goal is to make new mistakes, rather than repeating the same ones over and over again. As long as we are making progress, we're doing great! Use your own awareness to overcome challenges and keep moving forward.

5) Enjoy the Journey. - Most of us take life so seriously! Yes, it does have its serious moments. But overall this is supposed to be a pleasant experience, and we can make it that way by simply choosing to. Don't worry so much about whether you're making as much progress as you should, and don't get frustrated when things don't always work out as planned. Instead take a lighter attitude and understand that it's all just a journey and the point is to relax and enjoy.

Imagine that you're a beautiful white sponge, and you come across these brilliant pools of colored liquid. There's a red pool of passion, a pink pool of love, a yellow pool of knowledge, a green pool of gratitude, and a purple pool of fun. Go ahead and dip your sponge toe into each of these pools, and your color will begin to change. Rather than being a plain white sponge, you are now a beautiful, multi-colored sponge, filled with passion, love, knowledge, gratitude, and fun.

Unfortunately, there are also a few pools of black, brackish stuff like negative self-talk, fear, regrets, etc. If you accidentally absorb some of this and it begins to taint your colors, don't worry about it too much. Just focus on revisiting the pretty, colorful pools and absorbing more good stuff. It will dilute the negative stuff, and eventually get rid of it all together. :-)

When you avoid your bodies talk, it opens the door for incurring more problems.
The world is full of problems so why keep adding rather start subtracting.
Your body talks in many ways.
When your stomach grumbles, it is a clear indication you are hungry.
Feast, satisfy your tummy and you will live happier.
If your muscles are sore, it is a sign you lack exercise and stretches.
Stretch those muscles.
Work those muscles out.
The worst thing that could happen is that you will feel bad.
How bad can that be? Do you shun discomfort? Discomfort is a part of life.
Discomfort may produce in the form of boredom, fatigue, discomfort, and so on.
Your body and mind will tell you when you feel discomfort.
Instead of taking a flying leap to escape, face your discomforts.
Allow your discomforts to open new doors.
Open the doors, walk in and face them head on.
Most discomforts come from simple issues that lead to no problem at all.
Do you run around like a turkey with its head cut off suspending judgment of self? If you are, you are rolling backwards in a cranky vehicle that leads you nowhere.
Spark up them plugs and put the gears in motion by taking action to stop judging you.
Unless you are the man in the sky with the plan, you have no right to judge.

Throughout history, meditation has been an integral part of many cultures. Records indicate that meditation was practiced in ancient Greece and India more than 5,000 years ago. In the Buddhist religion, meditation is an important part of their spiritual practice. Different forms of meditation are practiced in China and Japan, and Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have traditions similar to meditation. The word meditation comes from the Latin `meditari? which means: exercise, turn something over in one?s mind, think, consider. It is defined as ?consciously directing your attention to alter your state of mind.?

Meditation is one of the proven alternative therapies that in recent years have been classified under the mind-body medicine therapies. It is continuing to gain popularity, as more and more health experts believe that there is more to the connection between mind and body than modern medicine can explain. Meditation has been shown to aid the immune system and improve brain activity, according to researchers. More and more doctors are prescribing meditation as a way to lower blood pressure, improve exercise performance, for people with angina, to help people with asthma to breathe easier, to relieve insomnia, and generally relax everyday stresses of life. Many hospitals now offer meditation classes for their patients because of the health benefits. All promote physiological health and well-being.

Traditionally meditation has been used for spiritual growth but more recently has become a valuable tool for managing stress and finding a place of peace, relaxation, and tranquility in a demanding fast-paced world. Benefits resulting from meditation include: physical and emotional healing; easing stress, fear, and grief; improved breathing; developing intuition; deep relaxation; exploring higher realities; finding inner guidance; unlocking creativity; manifesting change; emotional cleansing and balancing; and deepening concentration and insight.

Meditation elicits many descriptive terms: stillness, silence, tranquility, peace, quiet, and calm. All counter stress and tension. Lama Surya Das in his book Awakening The Buddha Within says, ?Meditation is not just something to do; it?s a method of being and seeing ? an unconditional way of living moment by moment.? In other words, learning to live in this moment because this moment is all we have. Henry Winkler is quoted as saying; ?A human being?s first responsibility is to shake hands with himself.? Meditation is an opportunity to `shake hands with ourselves? in a safe, simple way and to balance our emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

Meditation takes many forms in today?s society. All have one thing in common. They use concentration techniques to still the mind and stop thought. Various practices exist such as chanting (Mantra), focusing on energy centres in the body (Chakra Meditation), breathing, mindfulness (Mahamudra), loving kindness, formal sitting (Vipassana), expressive practices (Siddha Yoga), and walking to name some of the styles. Try each style and see what works for you or you may want to alternate between the techniques from time to time. For the purposes of this article, I will discuss Mahamudra and walking meditation.

Practical Steps To Begin Meditating

1. Find a place where there are few external distractions. A place where you feel emotionally comfortable, safe, removed from pressure and stress is the optimal location.

2. Wear clothing that is loose and sit or lie in a comfortable position.

3. Plan to meditate in an area that is warm and comfortable. You might want to have a blanket or light covering as some people experience a feeling of coolness when they aren?t moving around for a period of time.

4. Candles can be used to focus attention on the task at hand. If you use them, remember to be cautious and extinguish them before leaving the room.

5. Relaxation is a key component of meditation. Take a few moments to bring about a state of relaxation by taking a deep breath through your nose, expanding your lungs and diaphragm. Hold the breath for a few seconds and slowly exhale through your mouth. Do this several times until you feel relaxed.

6. Calm, soothing music can be helpful for inducing a state of tranquillity and relaxation

7. If you are hungry, have a little something to eat, as it is not necessary to meditate on a completely empty stomach.

8. Put your expectations aside and don?t worry about doing it right.


Meditation

Mahamudra is the form of meditation that is a way of going about one?s daily activities in a state of mindfulness. It is meditation integrated into all aspects of our lives. This following exercise is one you can do anywhere to create a feeling of inner peace. It is particularly helpful for those times you are stuck in traffic, waiting in line at the grocery store or bank, at the office when days are hectic, or when you are picking up the kids from school or extra-curricular activities. ?What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it,? wrote Hugh Mulligan. Meditation helps us remember to stop and `smell the daisies.?

Begin by taking a deep breath. Breathe deeply and as you do expand your lungs and your diaphragm. Hold the breath for a few seconds and slowly exhale through the mouth. Focus on your breath and clear your mind. Do this several times until you feel the slowing of your breath and a deep sense of peace fill your body. Consciously feel the peace permeate your body. Drop your shoulders and connect through the top of your head to the Universal Energy. Repeat. If you wish, send peace to those around you by connecting to their hearts with light and love.



Walking Meditation

A walking meditation is simply an exercise in awareness. There are four components:

? become aware of your breathing,

? notice your surroundings,

? be attentive to your body?s movement, and

? take some time to reflect on your experience when you return home.

To practice `awareness walking? bring awareness to walking wherever you find yourself. Take notice of your breathing. Are you taking short, shallow breaths without even knowing it? If so, take several deep breaths and centre yourself in your body and in the present moment. Appreciate the wonderful body you have and the blessing of being able to walk.

Notice your surroundings. What season is it? Take a few minutes to listen to the noises around you. Feel the wind, sun, fog, rain or snow on your face. Look at the people, animals, birds, sky, trees, and buildings around you. Breathe in and out and realise that you are an integral part of the environment.

Pay attention to your body. Are you holding tension in your shoulders, neck, solar plexus, lower back, or legs? Breath into any areas where you are feeling tension and let it drain into the Earth. Next, pay attention to your posture. Are you standing straight and tall or slouching? Walk in a way that is comfortable for you with your body loose and uplifted. Walk with dignity and confidence, one foot in front of the other and pay attention to the experience of movement. You can walk mindfully anywhere, along a sidewalk, walking your dog, in the mall, along the hallways at work. You simply remind yourself to be in this moment, taking each step as it comes. Some people find it helpful to repeat a mantra (mantras are sacred words repeated in order to bring focus to your mind). You can also use a variation on the walking mantra by counting your breaths. Walk more slowly than you usually do and count how many steps it takes for your intake of breath and how many steps for your exhale. In this type of meditation, your attention is focused on both your steps and your breathing bringing together a wonderful balance of peacefulness and awareness.

Take some time to reflect on your experience when you return home. Five or ten minutes brings closure to your walk and provides an opportunity to make the transition from this `place of peace? to ordinary day-to-day activities.

What exactly is Lateral thinking? For starters, it's a word invented by Edward DeBono in 1967. At some point since then it became a part of the English language (it is in the Oxford English Dictionary and most others now). DeBono, on his official web site, says there are several ways to define it.

Lateral thinking is a way of attacking problems from other angles, as opposed to the more traditional linear and logical ways. Debono uses chess as an example of where logic normally suffices, if the pieces are a given. Lateral thinking, however, acknowledges that in real life we mostly just assume the pieces are given, when really we need to change those pieces or look beyond them for the most useful solutions.

Lateral Thinking Puzzles

Enough with the definitions. Here are a few lateral thinking puzzles instead. These will give you a good feel for what the term means, and let you practice this "out of the box" kind of thinking.

Two Coins

Bill is on a raft in the ocean with several other survivors of a shipwreck. The others are too weak, so he or Mike must swim to a nearby island to look for help. It's almost certainly suicidal, due to the circling sharks, but there is little else to hope for. Mike takes the lose change from his pocket and puts two pennies in a hat. He tells John that one is a 2005 penny, and the other 1975. If Bill picks the newer penny he can stay on the raft, and Mike will risk his life. If John picks the older penny, he must go. Bill has seen that both pennies were actually dated 1975, but he doesn't want to say anything, because Mike is a big guy. How does he win, and get Mike to go, without exposing him as a fraud in front of the others?

The Speech

A well-known politician wrote a long speech. How did it help his career even before he gave the speech?

The Convent

John came to visit at a convent while the superior mother was out of town. He left before she returned, and was careful to leave nothing behind. The nuns said nothing about his visit, so how did the superior mother figure out that a man had been there?

Switching On Your Lateral Thinking

You are shown three switches outside a closed room. There are three lamps inside the room. You can flip the switches on and off as much as you want while the door remains closed, but then you must enter just once and determine quickly which switch is connected to which lamp. How can you do it?

Solutions To The Lateral Thinking Puzzles

Two Coins: Bill reaches into the hat and takes out either penny. He lets it slip out of his hand and fall into the ocean. Apologizing, he suggests that if the remaining penny in the hat is the 1975 one, he must have drawn the 2005 penny. Mike cannot argue with the logic unless he wants to admit to lying. Since the others won't tolerate a liar anyhow, he makes the swim.

The Speech: A true story solution: In 1912, President Teddy Roosevelt was shot in the chest. The folded-up manuscript of his speech was in his breast pocket, and slowed the bullet, saving his life, and so helping his career.

The Convent: John left a toilet seat up.

Switching On Your Lateral Thinking: Turn on the first one on for a minute, then turn it off and turn the second on. Enter the room and feel the two bulbs that are off. The warm one was turned on by the first switch, the light that is on is connected to the second, and the other to the third.

Complaining is a way of life for some people. It was certainly a way of life for my mother. I don?t remember a day going by without her complaining, endlessly. I don?t think I ever heard a word of gratitude out of my mother?s mouth. No matter how good things were, she would manage to find something wrong. No matter how perfect I was ? and God knows I tried to be perfect! ? she always found something wrong with me, as well as with my father.

Over the years of counseling others, I?ve noticed that some people start every session with a complaint. They can?t seem to help it. Like my mother, they are addicted to complaining.

Why do people complain? What is it they want or hope for when they complain?

People who complain are generally people who have not done the emotional and spiritual work of developing a loving, compassionate inner adult self. They are operating as a wounded child in need of love, attention and compassion. Because they have not learned to give themselves the attention and compassion they need, they seek to get these needs met by others. Complaining is a way they have learned to attempt to get this. They use complaining as a form of control, hoping to guilt others into giving them the attention, caring and compassion they seek.

Complaining is a ?pull? on other people. Energetically, complainers are pulling on others for caring and understanding because they have emotionally abandoned themselves. They are like demanding little children. The problem is that most people dislike being pulled on and demanded of. Most people don?t want emotional responsibility for another person and will withdraw in the face of another?s complaints.

This is what my father did. He withdrew, shut down, was emotionally unavailable to my mother as a way to protect himself from being controlled by her complaints. Of course, he didn?t just do this in response to my mother. He had learned to withdraw as a child in response to his own mother?s complaints and criticism. He entered the marriage ready to withdraw in the face of my mother?s pull, while she entered the marriage ready to make my father emotionally responsible for her. A perfect match!

My father?s withdrawal, of course, only served to exacerbate my mother?s complaining, and she constantly complained about my father?s lack of caring about her. Likewise, my mother?s complaining served to exacerbate my father?s already withdrawn way of being. This vicious circle started early and continued unabated for the 60 years of their marriage, until my mother died.

While my parents loved each other, their ability to express their love got buried beneath the dysfunctional system they created. Unfortunately, this is all too common in relationships. One person pulling ? with complaints, anger, judgment, and other forms of control - and the other withdrawing, is the most common relationship system I work with.

A person addicted to complaining will not be able to stop complaining until he or she does the inner work of developing an adult part of themselves capable of giving themselves the love, caring, understanding and compassion they need. As long as they believe that it is another?s responsibility to be the adult for them and fill them with love, they will not take on this responsibility for themselves.

Our inner child ? the feeling part of us ? needs attention, approval, caring. If we don?t learn to give this to ourselves, then this wounded child part of ourselves will either seek to get it from others, or learn to numb out with substance and process addictions ? food, alcohol, drugs, TV, work, gambling, and so on. If, as a child, a person saw others get attention through complaining ? as my mother did with my grandmother ? and if complaining worked for the child to get what he or she wanted, then it can become an addiction. Like all addictions, it may work for the moment, but it will never fill the deep inner need for love. Only we can fill this need for ourselves, by opening our hearts to the Source of love. Only we can do the inner work of developing a loving adult capable of opening to the love of Spirit and bringing that love to the child within. People stop complaining when they learn to fill themselves with love.

The terms 'Feelings' and 'Emotions' are often used interchangeably. However, they are as different as night and day. Emotions are the feelings that were never processed, so as to let go and move on. These stuffed/stored feelings are then triggered or your buttons are pushed; thus, you experience an emotional hook to a past experience that is re-experienced - similar to an instant replay.

The button pushing accompanied by an emotional re-action, act one - scene two, act four hundred -scene one thousand or act one thousand - scene two thousand...you get the point. When that right or wrong situation rears its ugly head, you automatically go into the defense mode and prove your Self right. Or in the extreme emotional state of the conflict you will acquiesce and make your Self wrong about something or another - and play martyr.

This emotional re-action is the button pushing scenario that keeps you anchored in the past, on the defensive to prove your Self something or another. Most people state that someone hurt his/her feelings. No! He/she did not hurt your feelings. Your stored feelings from yesteryear were triggered and your irrational emotions spring into gear. You are on the alert - guarding against the stored feelings, which are triggered. How does this transpire?

Your stored feelings (hook or hooks) to the past are triggered easily. When you are affected by the immense pressure on your emotional and physical body, you are forced by these emotional upheavals to process them.

Whether you are aware of what is transpiring or not, you are destined to repeat these cycles of emotional instability. No Fun!! Therefore, it is not your feelings that are hurt. You are triggered by the emotional hooks to your unresolved issues. You are hurting your Self by your reactionary emotional attachment to the stored feelings of past experiences. Experiences that you may have long forgotten, yet, the emotional hooks are alive and well waiting to be triggered so that you can process them once and for all, so that you are free to live authentically.

Indeed, you are hurting your Self by your reactionary emotional attachments to past experiences. How are these emotional reactions working for you? You can stop this pattern.

Your stored feelings are connected to your left brain. The left brain is where the analytical and logical functioning is managed. Not so great! When you are only using your left brain, which is connected to your male, right, manifesting side, the emotional Self re-creates the traumas and dramas on regular cycles of emotional upheavals. These upheavals may appear different, but, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, these emotional upheavals usually have interconnected relationships to previous experiences. Hence, the repeated emotional patterns triggered in your left brain are re-created through your male manifesting side. Good grief!!

However, when you connect to your feelings within your heart, you do not need to go into reenactments of the past. You can stay in the moment by feeling out the situation, the event and the relationships in the present moment. Feeling is heart based - versus head based as the stored feelings are triggered and the emotions rise. Feeling is heart based. Stored feelings are head based. You can not make an emotional connection unless it is a repeated dysfunctional relationship to someone or some situation.

You feel connection. You can not emotion love. You feel love. Your female left created side and your male right manifesting side are in alignment when you are feeling from your heart! You are connected to life with feeling and through feeling from your heart.

What you rationalize in your computer brain/head are the unreasonable reasons to react and emotionally repeat patterns, relationships and situations. When you feel from your heart, you know without doubt what is best for you and your life. Emotions are great excuses for excusing your Self. Feelings are real, deep and empowering. When you feel from your heart, you are centered in Self. When you are emotional you are functioning from old stored unprocessed feelings - a huge difference!

Feelings and emotions are worlds apart. Emotions keep you separate from your Self. Feelings keep you connected to your Self. You are a part of something greater than your emotions can ever achieve. Emotions are repeated dysfunctional stored feelings from the past living in your present moment, when you are emotionally triggered.

Feelings are the expression from your heart living in the moment and being authentically alive. Is there a difference between emotions and feelings? Don't think your answer. Feel your answer. What do you feel? Make a choice and sense the difference.

The direction your life is going to end up taking is all controlled by the kind of thoughts that you let dominate your mind. The dominant thoughts you have can decide whether your life will go forwards or backwards. The hard part is never finding the material that will help you know how to improve your mind control, the hard part always comes in the doing. The only way that the doing can ever get better is in practicing.

You've tried everything, you've listen to the experts, in frustration you shout out, "Why can't I seem to figure this out?" This can be stated for many areas in life, whether you are working on health, finances, business, improved communication skills or relationships. This is an amazing story. It's about my friend Robert. Robert is one of those really charismatic people. You know the kind I mean. Wherever he goes, people are just drawn to him, its truly a sight to behold.

At dinner the other night, Robert's charm drew the waiters in and they conversed with him a great deal. However, when I spoke up, the waiters didn't seem to pay much attention. They may have even been a little dismissive. It was as if the only person at the table was Robert. The difference was Robert's charisma. He has that special way about him that we all sometimes wished we had.

Anyway, in order to find out what that special something was, I decided to interview Robert. I captured about 2 hours worth of questions and answers with him.

Here is what I found out. Robert basically, though he might not say this directly, 'loves' people when he talks to them.

He has genuine concern and positive regard. He likes to focus in on one thing that he finds especially interesting about a person when he talks to them. It doesn't matter if he tells the person what that thing is or not, it seems to have the same effect. Try it and see what happens.

Now, how does that relate to health? Well you see, my article on the mind-body connection discusses the principle that Bernie Siegel wrote about in his book, Love, Medicine and Miracles. It seems that when his cancer patients revolutionized their thinking to become more loving and accepting of others, their cancer often went into remission.

You see, what Robert does with people, is love them when he talks to them. Keep in mind that love is an action, it is not an idea that sits there, it is active. Bernie's cancer patients loved those around them more and as a result their health improved.

Now do you see the connection between charisma, love and health? By loving others, not only can your health improve, but your social life improves as well.

It's a common thinking that there is a certain boundary in human thinking but when advancing towards this approach it explains the human brain has unlimited powers. The thinking ability of human mind is like that quantity that cannot be measured, no definitions, no boundaries and limited, unlimited powers etc. A famous science philosopher and thinker that normal human beings know only about 10 percent of the brainpowers say it. Not everyone believes this but the emotional and mental aspects of a person, when combined, leads to better self improvement.

Emotions love to dominate our actions and reactions, even though we do not want it to happen sometimes. The society often see emotions as a sign of weakness, so people are used to putting them aside and focusing on the rational aspects more and more.

No matter how strict and logical you may be, you will always feel. One way or another, someone or something will get through you.

Positive emotions are a lifelong goal for many of us concerned about emotional health and self improvement. What is more important; the amount of money you made during your life or the times you laughed out of sheer joy?

People tend to put their positive emotions behind their negative feelings. This is one of the biggest problems that people come across during their lives.

There is no clear way to ignore a negative experience and try to replace it with a positive one. Life just does not work that way.

For example, when you were a child, if your goldfish dies, you would be heartbroken. Your parents will probably buy you another goldfish but the sorrow is still there.

Things get even more complex when you become an adult. A fight with your spouse the night before will affect your entire day. You will go to work angry, tired, and your mind will wander. On the way home from work you will not notice the sun shining and you would not be tempted to stop at a roadside stand to pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables.

All this because that one negative thought has contaminated the way you perceive the reality around you.

In this moment you will realize finding a safe place to relax your mind will do wonders for your emotional and mental improvement.

That place is relatively easy to find. It can be an actual place or an imaginary location. The best idea is to totally lose yourself in it.

Let us say you have a problem on your mind and it just would not go away. Go bowling. Do not know how? Just give it a shot.

Get caught up in the game. Your mind will drift away from the negative thoughts that dominated your last hours or days and start processing a whole new kind of information.

A safe haven can take many forms. It can be a song, a movie, even a person or animal. The main thing is allow yourself to get completely involved with this new activity.

You might still get flashes of the problem every now and then. Ignore it and get even more absorbed in what you are doing.

When the bowling game, the song, or the movie ends you will abruptly return to reality. You will probably want to retreat back to the safe place. Do not do it.

The safe place exists only as a helping hand, not as a solution to your life's problems, may it be a small or big. It serves only as an escape route.

You will return from your safe zone with an increased energy level. You will feel better about yourself and gain more confidence. You will see that any issue can be resolved.

This is how a small escape from a harsh reality can increase your emotional and mental health. Try to do this often and you are on your way to better self improvement.

Two tired? Ok, so I'm not as funny as I think I am but I do have some assistance for those days you just can seem to pull it together. When we are tired we do not function to the best of our ability but a few simple steps can get you back in the game. The first one is so simple that it is overlooked. One of the major contributors to daytime fatigue is dehydration. If you find yourself with a case of the yawns get up and drink a couple of small cups of water. Why not just one big cup? First of all drinking the water slowly helps it to be absorbed rather than just running straight through your system. Secondly it is more steps of activity and some of the energy boost will come from just getting up and moving around.

Following that theme would be stretching. According to Chinese medicine there is a pocket of reserve energy stored between the kidneys and the way to release it is to stretch you lower back. The way to accomplish this would be to sit on the floor with your legs together and stretch towards your toes several times. Whether or not you believe in the ancient Chinese secret is irrelevant. Standing up, getting down on the floor, stretching and getting up off of the floor is a lot of physical activity and by that alone can boost your energy level.

Have you ever seen someone doodling and think that they were not paying attention? Strangely enough the opposite is true, doodling helps us to maintain or regain focus. As a lifelong doodler myself I have always known that I can pay attention better if I doodle a bit. The doodling is a mindless activity but it stimulates the focus centers of the brain. So the next time you need to focus doodle a little and see how it works for you.

Snacks can be a two edged sword. Vitamin C helps decrease fatigue and the snacks that are rich in vitamin C such as oranges take some effort such as peeling or slicing. Remember the more physical activity the better. Chocolate also contains caffeine which can help a lot with fatigue and focus problems. The downside is that both of them contain a lot of sugar. A spike in your sugar level often will add energy but it will be followed quickly by a crash. The trick would be to have a single orange or a single square of chocolate rather than a fruit salad or a whole candy bar.

Finally if there is a way to engage someone in a conversation that can be a big boost. Especially if you can talk about something that gets you excited. Is there a project at work that is particularly exciting to you? I didn't think so but it was worth a shot. What about a favorite hobby or sports team? Do you have a coworker with a rival favorite team or a coworker that enjoys the same hobby as you? If you will look back there have probably been several times when you started a conversation saying "I'm worn out" and left the conversation excited. When the conversation centers of our brain are activated it stimulates our whole brain. A simple short conversation may help you be more productive.

Women have two X chromosomes, which means they tend to be shorter and weaker than men; they also tend to be more communicative and nurturing, and generally show more feminine energy. Men have an XY chromosome, which means they tend to be taller and stronger than women; they also have more masculine energy, tending to be more aggressive, independent, and goal-oriented.

But just as some women are taller than most men, there will be women who have more masculine energy than their male counterparts. I am one such woman. A biologist at my office used to say that the bottom of one of my Xs must have fallen off, because it looked suspiciously like a Y. "There's a lot of man in your woman," he would tease me.

We each have masculine and feminine energy in us, and by developing our opposite we'll be able to access whichever energy is most appropriate for the situation-something I call "good Gender Physics." Feminine energy is all about the collective, so it naturally forms relationships. This ability to "tend and befriend" is important when it comes to influencing people, as people are more readily influenced by those they like and trust. Meanwhile, masculine energy is action-oriented and directive. People are influenced by this domineering demeanor, as they recognize that the leader is there to take control and protect them.

Betty-Ann Heggie Both energies are valuable as long as they are balanced with the other, so it's important not to let one energy dominate. Too much masculine energy, and people will see you as pushy and uncaring; too much feminine energy, and you'll be perceived as wishy-washy and not worth listening to.

To use both your masculine and feminine energy to influence others, use a combination of both story-telling and facts:

1) Facts: Masculine energy loves to use facts, because it wants to definitively establish what's right and what's wrong. But facts don't always tell the whole story-remember the old saying, "figures lie and liars figure?" Still, carefully-chosen facts used to reinforce a position can be an effective way of establishing credibility, and can be beneficial by forcing analysis. But they can also be viewed as aggressive and declaring, separating the listener from the presenter. It's tempting for an individual with an over-abundance of masculine energy to use facts to establish a pecking order. This "one-upmanship" creates a win-lose situation which decrease one's ability to influence.

2) Story-telling: Feminine energy loves to tell stories, as they demonstrate that "we are all in this together." Unlike masculine energy that sees life as black and white, feminine energy sees it as shades of grey. Stories also reinforce our culture by establishing our values and ethics, which is one of the primary aspirations of feminine energy. Finally, stories are experiential and tap into our senses and feelings. Listeners visualize images, hear sounds, and feel emotions. They more easily trust what is being said and are influenced by the speaker. Unlike the use of facts, stories aren't seen as authoritarian, but rather ensure an empathetic connection. (Still, a story without facts can be seen as total fabrication or a fairy tale!)

Facts and storytelling are as intertwined as masculine and feminine energy-they're each more effective when integrated with the other. I saw this in action during my corporate career. A CEO that I worked for was a master at influencing others, and he did it with a mix of facts and stories. He always assembled his facts and could spit them out faster than a computer if a situation called for putting another in his place. But he really shone when he told a story, and he used this feminine energy tactic often and to his advantage. Many times over the years of working for him I watched him win over a tough adversary by telling a story. He not only engaged his listener's emotions, but made his point stick through the effective use of facts.

The X and Why of influencing others calls upon each of us to develop our opposite so that we can use both masculine energy facts and feminine energy stories to achieve our goals. I have never been a person that is constantly afraid of something going wrong with my health or of dying. In fact, I have spent most of my life without fears about health or death. My wife, on the other hand, has always been really concerned about issues relating to her health and to the health of the ones she loves most. I guess some would call her paranoid about health issues.

I had never met someone so paranoid about health issues until I met my wife. It took me a few years to really understand where she was coming from when she would urge me to the doctor at the first sign of a cough or cold. I spent the first years of my married life quite frustrated by her and her constant paranoid ideas about our health and life.

My wife decided to begin going to counseling to discuss her issues of being paranoid about health and disease and dying. She asked me to accompany her and I agreed with great joy. I wanted to take every opportunity I could not only to understand my wife, but also to learn how I could better partner with her and understand her needs. I had no idea just how paranoid she was about sickness and death, nor do I think she knew, until we walked away from her first counseling session a few years ago.

The counselor quickly pointed out that her extremely paranoid thoughts and feelings about every symptom that may be abnormal were directly tied to losing her mother suddenly when she was a young girl. Of course, both of us had thought about the possibility of that connection, but never before had we so seriously thought through the implications of a small child losing her mother without warning.

Of course losing a parent unexpectedly would create the atmosphere for possible paranoid thoughts and feelings about death. If your mother had no symptoms of sickness and then she suddenly died, why wouldn't you be paranoid that one day you would just die as well? My wife's paranoid thoughts and feelings were being explained to her and to myself in ways we had never thought of before.

She has been able to find almost total freedom from her paranoid thoughts of death and dying as she has come to grips with the fact that her mother's death was not her fault and that sometimes sickness and death gets the best of us. If you or someone you know struggles with paranoid thoughts as well, I'd urge you to get into a counselor as soon as possible. You do not have to live that way any longer.

How to improve brain function? Start with a few questions.

Is problem solving easy for you? Do you learn new things quickly? Can you improve your brain function? Your answers to these questions will have an effect on your brain function, because brainpower and psychology are intimately connected.

Brain Function and Expectation

1. A friend spent his childhood with wealthy kids and their families. He now makes more money than most of us. Coincidence? Did rich friends give him money? Did they help him in business? No to all three questions. He just grew up with an expectation of a certain level of income. His mind will always push him to take actions towards that level.

2. The book said there was a checkmate in four moves, so I looked until I found it. I used to think those elegant solutions to chess puzzles were very rare in real games. I eventually realized they are there, but that without the expectation of finding them, I settled for less worthy moves. Now I find the elegant moves more often.

Do you see how expectation and belief expands or limits your mind and your life? Now, to apply this to better brain function, you need to adjust your expectation and unconscious beliefs about your brainpower.

What you think certainly affects what you accomplish. When you believe you can improve your brain function, you are far more likely to do what's necessary to get that result. So how do you adopt the most useful beliefs and expectations?

Okay, don't worry. I won't tell you to stand in front of a mirror making positive affirmations. I have an easier way.

Affirmation or Evidence?

Try this experiment: Watch for polite drivers for two days, making a mental note to yourself each time you see one. Notice the polite ones, ignoring the rest. By the way, this will change your experience of driving in a positive way. Then watch for rude drivers for two days, and you'll see them all over.

Do the exercise above, and you'll understand that you experience the world not just according to what is there, What you pay attention to is the more important part of your experience. Ready to apply this to your thinking process?

Notice your success. When you learn something new, make a mental note, or write it down even. Point out your problem-solving successes, and you'll have more of them. When you're thinking clearly and effectively, tell yourself, "Look at that brain go!"

Go ahead and make those affirming statements, but why not make them when you are looking at the evidence? Evidence is more convincing than affirmation. Watch, and you'll find examples of progress, however large or small. Focus on these, and remember them. You can start doing this right now. That's how to improve brain function.

This is the first in a series of articles about the journey of a life time: the journey to make significant change; a journey that has a beginning but has no absolute ending, only a set of pre-planned destinations along the way. These destinations will change over time and become clearer as you learn what the real meaning of the journey is.

Every journey starts at the beginning. This "beginning" is the point at which you decide to go in a different direction. You decide to take an action that creates a move in a direction you may not have been going before. Or, at least, a direction in which you have been directed by someone who has been to the destination you desire to go. As with all journeys, this journey will have a Mile Marker 0.

The Mile Marker 0 on US Hwy 1 in the United States is located at the corner of Fleming and Whitehead streets in Key West, FL. It is the end of the highway near the Southernmost Point in the U.S. If you are here, you must decide to change direction and head off on a journey to another place or you will end up in the ocean; all wet and maybe drowning.

Mile Marker 0 is the point at which you decide there will be a change. It is the point at which you decide there will be no more going south (no further down). It is the end of one journey and the beginning of another. There must be a change in direction if you are to arrive at the ultimate destination your heart, mind and soul truly desires.

You probably do not have the skills, knowledge or mindset necessary to reach this destination but, you are looking for a map; a map that has been drawn with explicit instructions and marked with interesting stops along the way. This map has been generated by others who have been where you have been, made the same decision to change direction you have and have reached the ultimate destination you so strongly desire. How did they find the way? The same way you are going to find the way: by following a well-defined map outlining the route which is posted with mile markers along the way to ensure you get to where you want to be.

The road you travel must have "drunk bumps" on it to remind you to stay on the road and in your lane. "Drunk Bumps" are those small, reflective speed bumps found on the outside and center of a road lane for the purpose of getting your attention when you become distracted or weary. These "bumps" are other travelers you find along the way who you will build relationships with. These people will be available to you, lest you stray from the roadway or get lost.

It doesn't matter the change you are trying to make. It only matters that you want to change. You are now standing at Mile Marker 0. Where do you want to go? Do you want to start your own business? Do you want to rebuild a relationship? Do you want to be free of an addiction? The key to the beginning is the desire to change. Turn in a new direction and start following the map others have drawn for you from their experience of their "time in the seat".
