By adding 75% of these to your daily routine you lower your chances of becoming a victim exponentially. Some of these may take a little planning, and maybe a little training, but most can be implemented as part of your natural routine.
Here's your personal safety checklist
Make Sure:
1. You always stay alert to your surroundings
2. You walk calmly, and confidently, and with purpose as to prevent the appearance of a victim or easy target.
3. You vary your daily travel schedule and routine
4. You walk in well lit areas and away from shrubs, recessed doorways, and other dark, potential hiding places
5. You have studied some form of self defense that covers "Real World" threats, not just the aerobic you practice in the health club
6. You carry your wallet inside your jacket, not out side, in your front pants pocket, not the back, and you carry your purse in front of you, with the opening facing your body
7. You don't flash money or jewelry in public places
8. If you work late you get an escort to your car
9. You keep your keys in your hand as you approach your home, apartment or car door
10. You sit near the driver when using public transportation
11. You keep your vehicle locked when driving
12. You stop your car far enough behind the line or car in front of you to maneuver your vehicle away
13. You park in well lit areas with public activity
14. You do a full inspection of your vehicle, including underneath.
15. You try to shop with others rather than on your own
16. You lock shopping bags in the trunk where they are unseen
17. You don't keep your home address anywhere in your car
18. You keep your garage door opener on you as opposed to in the car
19. You never leave your vehicle running unattended
20. When shopping you always have one hand or arm free
21. You don't take risks with strangers, including giving strangers a ride, letting them into your home, or allowing them to convince you to follow them somewhere for any reason.
22. Learn to properly use mace or a stun device or a taser
By incorporating these simple steps into your daily routine you get an added bonus of "feeling safer" which expresses a special confidence that may ward off an attack before it even starts.
