In the field of counselling and helping people to help themselves, there is an enormous variety of therapies and philosophies. Some are pragmatic and some are highly emotional or spiritual. Here we discuss a few of the more interesting ones.

The name of this type of counselling illustrates from what systems it is derived.

Neurological - the nervous system regulates our bodies.

Linguistic. -Language is our communication.

Programming. -This is the relationship between mind and language that results in, or explains behaviour.

The 13 presuppositions are accepted philosophies that form a foundation of this belief. They are also called 'givens'.

A few of these assumptions bear some resemblance to current psychological findings. NLP enthusiasts have confidence in its success, and do seem to have flexibility in that they are open to adapt and to seek new methods when they find that something doesn't work. The psychology fraternity has reservations because NLP methods aren't always based on empirical studies, but rather on trial and error.

Chakra balancing. Chakras are the entry gates of the aura. These are like vibrating and rotating discs contained in the inner self. That is, the spiritual self within the body self. They receive and transmit energy to and from every other thing and being in the universe. There are 88,000 in the human body. 40 play a significant part. These are in the finger tips, hands, feet, and shoulders. In the spiritual body there are 7 main chakras from the base of the spine to the top of the head. If one or more of the chakras become blocked or too open, the energy will not flow correctly and the whole system becomes unbalanced and ill. Through various techniques they can be brought back into balance and health returns.

Astrology charts are extremely familiar to most people. Astrology is a very ancient system of beliefs and traditions that is based on the relative positions of various well-known stars and planets and their formations. Depending on the placement of these celestial bodies, astrologers believe they can interpret the past and present and predict the future. In astrology there are:

• Four material elements: fire [spirit, energy]; air [intellect, communication]; water [emotion, nurture]; earth [material things, security]


• Three qualities: cardinal; fixed; mutable


• The zodiac: are twelve constellations, each with an element and a quality. For instance, Aries - cardinal - fire.


• If you want to read your birth chart, or horoscope, you will have to interpret a wheel formation that shows the various cycles that all living things go through. The symbols, signs, planets etc, will reveal forces that affect your life at any particular time.

Hypnosis is a strange, inexplicable state. It isn't sleep, because the subject remains extremely alert. It can only be explained as a trance. It can be used to extract sub-conscious memories and thoughts, as the subject is in a completely relaxed and uninhibited state. It is also a state of extreme vulnerability to suggestions, and for this reason it isn't generally recommended except in cases of extreme necessity, and by highly ethical experts.
