Every cold trudging pedestrian loves to see those glowing orange lights coming towards them when it means that they won't have to walk any further. Many drivers hate their sudden changes of direction, speedy spins in the road and ability to block a whole road while their drunken cargo falls towards the pavement. Whatever you think about taxi drivers, it is a solid profession that feeds the families of countless hardworking drivers up and down the country.

Taxi driving is also one of those professions that are very appealing to many, as essentially all you need to qualify is to have a valid driving licence. If you are considering starting to work towards getting your taxi drivers licence, here are some of the other skills you will need.

Good driver

While there are many people out there that are legally allowed to drive, there are plenty who would not be considered to be good drivers. To drive a taxi, you really need to be a very good driver. This is because you need to make your passengers feel at ease. You can be sure that if you don't drive well, they will soon phone up your depot and complain and your job could be at risk. Driving with consideration, with patience and restraint will ensure you have a good reputation.

People skills

As a taxi driver you will spend your entire day meeting new people. While you don't have to speak to them, you may find it hard not to so getting your people skills up to scratch will make you a better taxi driver. Top tip: try not to get involved in controversial debates while driving as you may take your mind off the road.

Sense of direction

While SAT NAVs can help you get from A to B, you can't rely on them for everything. To be a good taxi driver you need to have good special awareness in terms of where you are in a city as well as where you are on the road. You don't want to have to clock off when your SAT NAV breaks down. For instance, you wouldn't be a very good cab Belfast if you couldn't find the airport.

Whether you want to join the ranks of the Belfast International Airport taxis or if you just want to go into business for yourself, having these character traits should ensure you have a long and successful taxi driving career.
